Black & Gold Eatery, Cafe Review

Black and Gold Café review.

Black and Gold coffee and eatery is what every cafe should strive to be like, pretty darn faultless. On a rare nothing-planned Friday, a friend and I headed over the bridge simply to be rid of the city smoke. After cruising through the sunny streets of Albany without a care in the world, we decided to check out the much-recommended cafe Black and Gold in Rosedale.

Although I had heard raves of this wee cafe from many a practiced hand and coffee connoisseur,  I had never before taken the time to leave the west and head over the shore for a dabble in what that side of Auckland has to offer in terms of hospitality. Never again will I make the same mistake, Black and Gold was faultless. Auckland has more or less hundreds of cafes scattered around the fringes and a hundred more smack bam in the middle. Although I can not boast to having visited more than a few handfuls of these, I am well aware of the subtle and not so subtle differences that make a good cafe into a great one. In saying this, I cant remember the last time I had such an enjoyable coffee date that wasn’t simply because of the company with me.

Black and Gold is light, inviting, trendy and for want of a better word, cool, simply because it is and can hardly be accused of trying too hard. Test tube flower holders are the perfect petite touch of charm. Customer service was on point and the poor waitress was genuinely not bothered by my many annoying questions and dietary requirements, and even expressed her utmost sympathy towards my struggle to justify extra avocado.

I had heard whispers that the barista was well practiced in the art of coffee which was extremely evident in my half strength almond milk latte which was as beautiful as it was embarrassing to order. The fresh mint, lemon and apple juice was worthy of praise and the food, holy moly, what a perfect little feast. The Avo Mame Smash with Hamlomi, crunchy mixed sprouts, semi dried tomato on wholemeal sourdough was scrummy and was quickly followed and shared by The Pork Bap with pulled pork, slaw, dukkah and avocado to replace the pickle.

The food was delicious, the service friendly and good humoured and the beverages applaudable. My only regret was not taking home a cake with what looked like blueberry and rhubarb cream cheese icing. Screw being dairy intolerant, it looked far too dreamy.

I regret that I was far too busy gazing lovingly at my food to reach for my camera or my phone after the food arrived but fingers crossed my words and sentences can paint you a fairly decent picture. If not you’ll just have to visit yourselves.

Sugar, spice and all things nice.

A few days ago I had the pleasure of heading along to Ashley & Co’s re branding and product launch. Here are a few of my thoughts and a few images all of which, and of course are credited to those worthy of credit.

What are little girls made of? Sugar, spice and all things nice, that’s what little girls are made of or so they say. The author of this childhood nursery rhyme clearly hadn’t experienced the fragrance and scents of Ashley & Co. What are Ashley & Co made of?  Mimosa, lily, sandalwood, wild ginger and ylang-ylang, to name a few scents. All packaged in a simple but elegant matt black interior with gold foil print.

Five hundred candles made from home – a modest beginning and no small feat. Ten years later with candles, diffusers, hand wash and hand soaps stocked on shelves both national and international, Ashley & Co is taking the hand basin world in their stride, not to mention the world of all things scented.

Founders, Jackie and Ben Ashley and business partner Jeremy have just celebrated the reinvention of their fragrance brand. The celebration was held at the spacious and graceful IMO showroom in Parnell. What was seen, was the expression of a couple’s vision, dosed with some guidance from whimsical imagination. Ashley & Co’s reinvention focused on elegance, simplicity and a bit of boldness, with an aim at creating a personal connection between product and person.

Each guest received a beautiful, individually crafted and hand poured candle, the art of which appeared to require much patience, attention and a good pair of dungarees. Once Upon & Time, waxed perfume was a gift well given. Fig Leaves, Gardenia and Vetiver, presented with a message of memorable moments over dates and days. Although I’ve always been a pushover for Ashley & Co, my six year old nearly nephew took a particular liking upon discovering my gift. When asked about the smell his answer included, seaweed and lemonade but as he hurried to correct me ‘ the nice kind of seaweed’. My four year old nearly niece on the other hand exclaimed ‘it smells like boys’, (oh I wish boys were made of this). However, regardless of their lack of experience in the fragrance industry, they both agreed that it was a very handsome looking candle, high praise from two kids whom up until recently have only seen candles on birthday cakes.

The gift of soap, although less elegant also enriches the senses and is encased in an urbane little grey box. This particular mini bar, proudly labeled Parakeets & Pearls comprises of goats milk and manuka honey and is not too be confused with a delicious sounding cheese. ‘Enhance your every day’ is the inscribed message etched onto the well-designed packaging and is a clear tribute to Ben Ashley’s background in design.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Ashley & Co, I’ll give you the quick low down. Ashley & Co is about the potential of reality, to connect with yourself and the present and to enhance the little things in the chaos of the big things. Six fragrances run throughout the entirety of the brand taking on the form of candles, body products and diffusers. All products are home grown from little ole New Zealand with packaging that is completely recyclable and biodegradable. Organic oils are cause for praise on the environmentally friendly scale, with gone green formulas for both a lotion and a hand wash. Made here in Auckland, Ashley & Co and their new look is something to applaud and congratulate.

I don’t know about you but I sure wouldn’t mind being made of sugar, spice, all things nice and a little bit of vanilla, wild ginger and lily.

Here’s to the markets and falling in love with cheese. Or , The French Market La Cigale. Or maybe , The secrets of strangers and street stalls.

When I was in London my heart was in serious trouble. Markets are one of my many guilty and simple pleasures. I could have spent a lifetime at the Brick Lane and Portobello markets.

Then I arrived in Holland and I was pretty certain Amsterdam had stolen my heart. The floating flower market and the best apple pie I have ever tasted, and not for the reasons you might think.

Bestappple pie

And then I cheated on the both of them when I discovered French farmer’s markets and French wine. And I thought I was in love with Europe. I knew nothing. I’m not even going to begin describing the Chiang Mai New Years markets and surrounding street food stalls. It’s like the world has these awesome secrets that you can only discover between rows of stalls and strangers. I hope someone has written a book titled just that. The secrets of strangers and street stalls.

Then I came home to the markets in my favorite city in the world. The little love of Wellington. The infamous Chafers doc markets where I spent little under a year selling the most divine dark chocolate and nibbling on French cheese from the stall next to mine. It is also the place where I bought my very first bunch of Peonies and decided that’s what I wanted to be when I grew up, that or French cheese.

I have recently decided to explore a suburb a week in Auckland, where I have just moved too. And this Saturday I visited Parnell and the famous French Market. The simple elegance this market holds is worthy of praise. Every single thing I ate I could taste exactly what was in it. Clean, raw beautiful food. I don’t think it’s my heart I should be worried, see for yourself!

Blogedit blogeditthree blogedit two I had the honey comb puff ( in the first photo ) And yes it was full of sugar, but was worth every bite.  I also got the most beautiful honey smoked salmon, which you can see in the second photo. As well as that I purchased the best falafels I’ve ever had in my entire life and some beautiful Moroccan hummus AND a cucumber garlic dip. There was also this lovely lady selling little ciabattas for 50c so I couldn’t say no! They were awesome flavors , capsicum and tomato, nutmeg, garlic and sunflower seeds. And the smoothies were filled with goodness the one above had organic green beans, banana, lemon, mint, avocado, apple, dates, chia seeds, coconut and mineral water ! Oh and the Focaccia next to the honey comb puff was feta, onion, marmalade, caramelised onion and horseradish !

I might just fall in love with Auckland after all.

Sunflowers and Lilies are definitely on the Student Budget.

My room has a balcony. My room also has a fully functional herb garden, two sunflowers and a bunch of lilies.  My room is simple and a bit on the small side, two things Auckland is not. On the back of my bedroom door is a map of the city and the surrounding suburbs , salute to the burbs . Come next week I’m going to be out and about exploring my new home , discovering new things to cook, make , do and see.  A Suburb a week, or at least a street. But for now here are a few photos of my bed , desk , trunk and basil.
